Morphological processing and individual frequency effects in L1 and L2 Spanish

چکیده
Surface frequency and proficiency modulate visual morphological processing in second language (L2) learners, but less is known about auditory processing. Moreover, working memory (WM) affects morphosyntactic processing, it unclear whether also modulates word structure In the present study, Spanish monolinguals beginner advanced L2 learners of completed an lexical decision task containing verbs varying complexity, individual task, a task. Beginner needed more time to process infrequent morphologically complex words, were unaffected by complexity or surface frequency. Also, WM did not Taken together, findings suggest dual-route mechanism at initial stages acquisition whole-word route for learners. The support extension models populations that selection results from linguistic rather than cognitive reasons.

Verbal Inflectional Morphology in L1 and L2 Spanish: A Frequency Effects Study Examining Storage versus Composition.
This study examines the storage vs. composition of Spanish inflected verbal forms in L1 and L2 speakers of Spanish. L2 participants were selected to have mid-to-advanced proficiency, high classroom experience, and low immersion experience, typical of medium-to-advanced foreign language learners. Participants were shown the infinitival forms of verbs from either Class I (the default class, which...
متن کاملPredictive sentence processing in L2 and L1
There is ample evidence that native speakers anticipate upcoming information at various levels during sentence comprehension. In contrast, some studies on late second-language (L2) learners support the view that L2 learners do not anticipate information during processing, or at least, not to the same extent as native speakers do. In the current paper, I propose that native and L2 speakers are u...
متن کاملOn the effects of L2 perception and of individual differences in L1 production on L2 pronunciation
The speech of late second language (L2) learners is generally marked by an accent. The dominant theoretical perspective attributes accents to deficient L2 perception arising from a transfer of L1 phonology, which is thought to influence L2 perception and production. In this study we evaluate the explanatory role of L2 perception in L2 production and explore alternative explanations arising from...
متن کاملRelative Clause Ambiguity Resolution in L1 and L2: Are Processing Strategies Transferred?
This study aims at investigating whether Persian native speakers highly advanced in English as a second language (L2ers) can switch to optimal processing strategies in the languages they know and whether working memory capacity (WMC) plays a role in this respect. To this end, using a self-paced reading task, we examined the processing strategies 62 Persian speaking proficient L2ers used to read...
متن کاملConstraining Morphological Variation and Development: Agreement in L2 Spanish
Structure building in language acquisition involves the adding of successive nodes in a hierarchical structure; its application is seen in the realm of syntax for both L1 (e.g. Clahsen, Penke & Parodi, 1993; Vainikka, 1993) and L2 acquisition (e.g. Vainikka & Young-Scholten, 1994, 1996), and to some extent within phonology as well (Brown, 1997). Although researchers in morphological theory argu...
